CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Miles Edgeworth
AGE: 26
CANON: Ace Attorney

CANON HISTORY: TAKE THAT
CANON PERSONALITY: Anyone encountering Edgeworth would instantly note his smug, condescending, almost frigid demeanor. He may not be the same vengeful brat he was when he began his prosecution career, but his hatred for crime and determination to see a case through remain, not to mention his generally intimidating attitude and his quick-thinking, complex mind. Yes, he may be polite and refined, even chiding Larry sometimes for how the latter treats women and constantly dressing to impress in court, but he will not hesitate to pull the rug out from under your feet if you are wrong, lying, hiding something, or simply an integral part of his quest for the truth. When he speaks, he commands everyone's attention and doesn't mince words. If he must be frank to get his point across or unearth a certain truth, then he will be frank even to the point of hurting someone's feelings or exposing someone's weakness. And he will do it by arguing expertly, by laying out the facts, and then catching you off-guard when you are at your most vulnerable – at a contradiction. To him, evidence is everything, to the point that he would trust it over his own memory. Despite his encounters with the world of spirit channeling, he maintains that he is a man of logic and science, skeptical to believe in such things like magical items that unveil secrets in people's hearts. Evidence is not only important in court, but it is important when you argue your case. But of course, when there is no evidence, trust Edgeworth to find the tiniest threads linking information together and follow them to the truth. He isn't all talk and confidence and swagger, after all. People don't call him the “Genius Prosecutor” (another moniker for him) for nothing. And not only is he smart, he also speaks fluent sarcasm and can unleash a particularly sharp tongue.

This isn't to say he's all business and cares nothing for the people he encounters. Though he doesn't show it, he is genuinely concerned for his comrades (most of the time) and will do what he can for them - sometimes to the point of doing things he would normally not think of, such as posing as a defense attorney, or even resigning from the Prosecutor's Office. On the outside, Edgeworth will scold, berate, throw up his hands in frustration – but inside, he just wants people to get where he's going and get on the track as well, or at least, stop jumping to rash decisions. He is not one for small talk; he shows his care for people by actions more than words. When Maya Fey let herself be cited for contempt of court, it was Edgeworth who paid her bail. After solving an embassy case, Edgeworth gave the (edible) rewards he received from Ambassador Colias Palaeno to Dick Gumshoe, saying he has no need for them. When Phoenix fell from a burning bridge into a freezing river and was hospitalized, Edgeworth took his friend's defense attorney badge and went to great lengths to ensure that he can pose as a defense attorney. When Kay Faraday, his self-proclaimed assistant, ran into a burning building and got herself accused of murder, it was Edgeworth who ran after her, and after her name was cleared, he proceeded to lecture her. And yet, he is not exactly the most social or outgoing of people. Sure, Edgeworth can play people and make them dance to his tune when he must, by intimidation or wit, in his pursuit of the truth, but that does not mean he is a people person per se. He only shows himself unguarded to a chosen few - people who have earned his trust.

However, Edgeworth can be extremely dense when it comes to matters of the heart and does not notice when a woman has become smitten with him, except when the woman is overly obsessed and downright creepy. That might be because he prefers to retain a professional demeanor even outside professional situations, or his early life was mostly spent honing his prosecution chops in anticipation of all the defendants to be declared guilty, or both, but in any case, it is clear that Edgeworth is not smart in every sense of the word. He certainly isn't as proficient in street smarts than he is with book smarts.

Edgeworth retains a proud streak and never takes mistakes lying down, especially when he made those mistakes (or when he believes he made those mistakes) and when they have a huge impact on the situation. He will wish he was stronger, because strong men don't faint and give in to their phobias during a huge earthquake, but what he doesn't realize is that he is already strong in so many other ways, especially when he faces witnesses and criminals inside and outside the courtroom. Edgeworth can overly react at times when he is wrong or when he is veering away from the truth, and his frustration is often quite apparent on his face and how he acts (note his angry bent-over-the-prosecution-desk sprite). Perhaps the von Karma influence (the creed of perfection) can never completely leave him, but at least he is more accepting of the losses he must bear if the truth is to be revealed, because not every defendant arrested is guilty as sin. And of course, that sarcasm and wit of his can turn into weapons in arguments that have absolutely nothing to do with work.

Edgeworth is a hard worker (sometimes too much of a hard worker) who doesn't give up even when his goals seem so far away. He presses onward, fully aware of the path he has chosen and the path he will walk, and searches for any opening that will lead him to victory. He remains dedicated to his study of the law and has shown his unparalleled diligence time and again and is determined to use it for the sake of the truth, and for the sake of others. Even if all hope seems lost and all his arguments have been rebutted, he will keep on trying to find that one nook or cranny he has yet to inspect, or that one angle he has yet to examine. He is not one to back down and throw in the towel. Because if he does, or if he commits one mistake in piecing all his information together, the truth will forever be lost.

And yet, despite having exalted his work ethic, one cannot complete a description of Edgeworth without talking about his secret hobby of watching the Steel Samurai, a kiddie TV series. It just goes to show that he does have a sense of fun, albeit one that is mostly hidden from the public - “mostly” because it crops up from time to time whether in his inner monologue or when a case has something to do with it. The sense of fun he shows to people more involves chess games and somewhat teasing people with his sarcasm, snark and smug manner. And one might even think that he takes great pleasure in making people squirm on the spot when they've been cornered and he is about to make a big reveal.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Edgeworth's grasp of logic, to many characters in the series, is supernatural. In fact, two gameplay modes in AAI, Logic and Logic Chess (only in AAI-2), as well as the Deduce option in investigation phases, are based on his ability to think on his feet, uncover contradictions and clues, and connect information together. He can take the pieces of a case and put them together like a jigsaw puzzle, filling in the gaps with the explanations and inferences he draws from careful examination of the facts he has on hand, and the logical possibilities. Other characters sometimes have to run after his train of thought when he is on a roll. Edgeworth was not considered the "Genius Prosecutor" for nothing. After becoming a prosecutor at the age of 20, remaining undefeated for 4 years and accumulating 6 years of lawyering experience in total, it's no wonder that his mental skills are sharp. To top it all off, he continues learning by studying foreign legal systems and has prosecuted in five different countries, connoting a knowledge of foreign languages.

Even the way he presents himself in the courtroom can be intimidating. Imagine staring down a prominent prosecutor who has earned his laurels, and who enters with his head held high, an icy stare and an entire arsenal of sarcasm, comebacks and arguments, who will not back down until the truth has been revealed in its entirety, who will not hesitate to put suspicious figures on the spot to obtain the information (or the confession) he has been searching for. Granted, he probably no longer intimidates people as much these days, but sometimes they still cower anyway, and some criminals can just be so stubborn that you would have to pull out all the stops to make sure the truth doesn't slip away. On the flip side, he can be persuasive, and if a theory is indeed the logical conclusion to a problem, he can deliver it and argue it effectively.

He has been into speech ever since he was in elementary school, having won awards for it as well as for essays, golf and playing the flute then. Besides knowing how to play the flute, he has also mentioned knowing how to play the piano. The game also hints at Edgeworth's interest and proficiency in chess (especially in AAI-2; in Logic Chess, he tries to trip up lying or evasive witnesses using arguments as his "chess pieces" and envisioning the confrontation as a game of chess where the goal is to tear down the witness' defenses and see through the lies).

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Miles Edgeworth
AU AGE: 22
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Edgeworth will be more muscled and flexible after years of training for figure skating, a physical education degree in college, becoming a P.E. teacher and learning (and excelling at) a few kinds of sports. He has greater endurance and strength, and faster reflexes. Otherwise, there are no notable physical differences, considering that he and his canon self are only a few years apart. Although he still has a cold glare and a resting lineface, he will be quicker to smile warmly than his canon counterpart. That counts as a physical difference, right?

AU HISTORY: Edgeworth's parents are two moderately successful defense attorneys in Recolle who run their own firm together. His mother is part-Japanese on her mother's side, although they were both born and bred in Recolle. He is an only child and grew up with at least one dog in the household. His parents would often kid that the dog/s are their other kids. This suited Edgeworth just fine; he did not really want any siblings and was satisfied with only his parents and dog/s living with him.

In school, he learned to make friends and open up, although more often than not it was the other kids who had to make an effort to approach him. Still, as time passed, Edgeworth learned to be sociable. Sometimes, when all else failed, he would talk about dogs, his parents' work as lawyers and their victories, school (what a nerd), or ice skating. And when he didn't want to talk to anyone, he focused on sports - including chess, which he learned because his father wanted him to. Edgeworth found out that he had a knack for chess when he was seven years old.
Unlike his parents, his passion became ice skating, and it started when he saw a competition on television, and asked if he could take lessons. His parents assented, and from then on, Edgeworth was dead set on becoming a world-class ice skater.

Although his parents were disappointed that he did not want to enter the legal profession, they nonetheless supported his dream, but they still tried to win him over with throwaway comments and their stories of their courtroom battles. They did not stop trying to persuade him until he was in high school. Still, they gave him an ultimatum - before he focused on skating, he should finish a college degree. Foreseeing that he will become a coach or an instructor once he's past his prime for the sport, Edgeworth chose to take up physical education.

Throughout his school years, Edgeworth wasn't always a varsity player. There were years when he would focus on his other interests, like reading (particularly mystery novels) and discussing sci-fi, fantasy and historical TV shows, or simply focus on schoolwork. When he was with the sports teams, he would usually do track and field, judo, or chess. Sometimes, he would participate in ballroom dancing competitions. He often got good grades (think: A's and B's, never slipping past a B minus), but was bad at art and wasn't good with musical instruments. His grades in math, compared to the rest, were usually mediocre. His best subjects, apart from P.E., were English and science.

In college, he no longer did varsity, but would occasionally help athletes train by giving them pointers, or just coming to watch his friends among them. However, as part of the physical education major curriculum, he nonetheless continued to hone his athletic skills. He graduated with honors, and set to work training for competitions, but as he was in need of money and something else to do while his training didn't take up all his time, he took up a job as a high school P.E. teacher.

His students would joke that Edgeworth was "a P.E. teacher by day, and an ice skater at night", even though since he did not come to school everyday, he had time to practice and train on the days he didn't hold classes. As a teacher, Edgeworth could be very stern and intimidating, but extremely hands-on. He was not content to stand around and bark orders; he would give demonstrations. Not only that, he knew how to push students to excel and do better, and he showed genuine concern for their grades. Unfortunately, one of the aspects about him the student body bewails his his tendency to give out homework for P.E.

It was his interactions with his students that taught him how to deal with children and young people in general, and appreciate them. He comes off as a combination of the strict big brother and the doting father. Any jokes from them are either brushed off or responded to with witty and/or snarky retorts. Knowing what it's like to long for a far-off goal and to work hard for it, he can offer a few words of advice to any student who asks.

But it is these things that have endeared Edgeworth to a job he had initially planned on keeping only for a short while. He may still be set on his goal to become a pro ice skater, but he feels that he is also developing a passion for teaching. Sometimes, he feels torn between pursuing his dreams of competing on the international rink, and the decision to settle down and really pour all his time and energy into teaching. While he knows he doesn't have a lot of time left to hone his skating skills - because as he becomes older, he moves past his prime for the sport - he can see himself just teaching and being around students as well. It's an internal conflict that he has shared with very few people, and their answer is often the same: ice skating first, and then when his body begins to feel the strain and exhaustion of competitions and exhibitions, he can then teach full-time, maybe even coach younger skaters.

AU PERSONALITY: Edgeworth's personality will show some marked changes considering that in this AU, he has both his parents, neither of them are dead, he never started down the path of revenge against criminals, and he never developed a fear of earthquakes and elevators. Generally he will come off as more laid-back, albeit with the same air of smugness and refinement.

For example, he is friendlier and more social (though not an extravert), as a result of his parents being around to teach him how to make friends and interact with others, but would display in certain instances a preference for being by himself or with only a few chosen people. Teasing and jokes affect him less, as well; he either brushes them off, or fires back with a witty retort - unless it really gets under his skin. Smiling comes a touch more easily to him now, although it's hard to break the habit of always showing a stern face as his determination and grit bordering on perfectionism still shine through. One might say that he is less concerned with keeping up a professional image, although when he competes, he definitely puts his game face on.

Having achieved a better work-life balance through the years, Edgeworth is less dense and more updated on social cues and scenarios. He remains diligent, but appreciates the need for hobbies and leisure time more than his canon self. Though he still believes in law and justice, he does not have that dogged determination to prosecute criminals and would rather leave that to law enforcement and the lawyers if he could - but when needed, he is more than willing to lend a hand.

However, Edgeworth will constantly be bothered by a conflict between the dream he set out to achieve (to become an internationally acclaimed ice skater) and a passion he only discovered recently (becoming a high school PE teacher). This is one of the few things he will keep secret from most people, with only his family and closest friends knowing about it. Edgeworth still wants to pursue skating, but at the same time, he knows that he is beginning to like teaching more and more. This is in contrast to his canon self, because at that point in canon Edgeworth has become very certain of his path in life. Despite this, what he is sure of is that he wants to be set apart from his parents. Edgeworth is uninterested in carrying on his parents' legacy and would rather forge his own path, so he asks everyone to always just call him "Miles".

Nonetheless, Edgeworth retains not only his determination and his diligence, but he also retains the aura of cold confidence he projects, his pride which causes him to take mistakes a little harder than most (although it is a bit less sensitive because this time, it is only himself that pushes him to achieve and excel and not the von Karma creed), and a sense of logic and reason now manifested in how he teaches his students and interacts with others, as well as his hobbies.
SAMPLE

(I am using a TDM prompt for my sample!)

"Sometimes, there are monster attacks. You know, like how sometimes there's a mugger on the loose."

"Muggers and monsters are different," Miles stressed with a flick of his hand. What did they think they lived in, a sci-fi television show? "Maybe you just saw a shooting for a new movie or something."

The woman watering flowers outside her shop shook her head. "No, no, these are real." She narrowed her eyes. "Have you been living under a rock?"

Miles sighed, running a hand through his hair. Have you been living in an action flick? was what he wanted to say, but he bit his lip, thanked her, and walked on.

The convention center was destroyed, but it was so odd that he didn't remember staring at a TV or a newspaper in surprise when it made headlines. Neither did he ever recall passing by a heap of rubble on his way to training or on his way to his classes. He had lent a hand with the repairs - his upper body strength came in very handy - but he couldn't stay long; he had dogs waiting for him at home, and he had to prepare for tomorrow's training routine.

The afternoon was almost over; the sky was taking on the purple tinge of twilight. It felt like he had done a lot of work at the ruins; already he was yawning and sluggishness was washing over his entire being. Miles stretched out his arms as he strode past, quickening his pace so he could rest at home instead. But his legs were beginning to feel like jelly and he began to long for some sleep...

Miles woke up, not remembering when or where he fell asleep. Sitting bolt upright, he wondered if he had been robbed, or drugged. But as he jumped back to his feet, he suddenly slipped back down onto the ground with a yelp. His hands sensed a cold, slippery surface instead of the somewhat rough pavement.

His gray eyes darted this way and that to confirm that somehow, he ended up in the middle of a skating rink. A busy one, with adults and children alike gliding leisurely past him and somehow not noticing that a man was sitting there with a bemused expression on his face. Something about this rink was familiar, and as Miles struggled to stand, wishing he had his skates with him to make this easier, he saw something that was possibly even stranger than the idea of monsters roaming the city.

There was a young boy with gray hair and a very determined scowl on his face, clutching the railings of the rink and attempting to navigate cautiously. Unfortunately for him, one of his feet would shoot one way, and the other, another way, and only his vicelike grip on the railing would save him from certain embarrassment. Beside him was a man Miles recognized as an instructor - his first instructor - skating calmly as if the action was merely second nature to him.

"Come on, Miles. It's okay. You can let go."

The boy gritted his teeth and clung even more tightly to what he perceived to be his lifeline.

"You can do it. You'll be fine."

Miles watched openmouthed and wide-eyed as his young self slowly brought one hand away from the railing, and then the other, and tried to put his best foot forward, literally and figuratively...

...only to slip and fall with a yell. Miles closed his eyes and grimaced when it happened, eternally grateful that he was way past that phase.
